Jacksonville turned out to be a very positive move for Toni. She found a job working for the National Cancer Society, as a spokes person. She was working for a man by the name of Gene Stinson

who just happened to be a friend of Gene Burrough.

Gene Stinson's office was located right across the hall from Gene Burrough's office.

Toni did not get along with Gene Stinson due to the fact he wanted to give orders all day and let everyone else do the work while he received all the credit.

He really wasn't a people person. Toni didn't think he was trying to be disrespectful, she just thought he didn't know how to handle the authority he was given over others. But he was about to find out how to treat people... Toni had very good work ethics. She wasn't the type of person that you had to keep your eye on to make sure that the work was getting done.

All he had to do was give her the work and she would take care of it right away. Toni recalled the day that the Cancer Society sent over three young ladies to help around the office.

When Toni was introduced to them, they developed an instant friendship and respect for one another.

Most of the work Toni was involved with took place outside the office. She mostly spoke to the teamsters and the longshoremen throughout the city. On this particular day Toni was working in the office.

Gene Stinson decided to make his presence known by shouting out orders to everyone that was within hearing distance.

He gave the girls an order

and they wouldn't even acknowledge him.

They just looked at Toni for her approval. Toni didn't like the way he spoke to the girls so she did not make eye contact with them.

That was her way of not giving her approval. Toni felt it was time for Gene Stinson to learn a lesson in relating to people. And if he didn't learn this lesson he was going to have a lot of unfinished work around the office.

Toni got the girls together and devised a little plan.

The girls would finish all their work.

When asked, they would say that they hadn't gotten around to it and they were going to make Gene think that he had misplaced his monthly report.

This would take place one hour before his supervisor was to arrive for their monthly meeting.

Toni knew he would come apart with the fear of not having his reports ready. Gene would then become putty in Toni's hands.

Toni asked Gene at what price was he willing to pay to make all his problems go away?
So Toni and Gene made a deal.

Toni would make his problems go away and in return he would only come to the office to drop off work and for his meetings. Now everybody was happy. The girls did their work in peace and Toni made sure that Gene's report was completed on time.

They really made him look good and it was worth it.

There was peace and harmony around the office and Toni made a good friend for life: Gene Stinson.

There is always a right way and wrong way to do just about everything in life, and by doing it this way everybody came out a winner.
